EU maritime skills project launched

European Commission co-finances project to identify and meet future skills needs of the maritime sector.

The European Commission will co-finance a project to develop strategies to identify and meet the future skills needs of the maritime sector and attract greater numbers of Europeans to work in maritime industries.

The four-year SkillSea project has been launched by the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), and the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), and led by the Rotterdam-based STC Group.

The consortium comprises 27 national maritime authorities, shipping companies, shipowners’ associations, maritime trade unions, and maritime education providers from 16 countries in Europe.

ECSA secretary general Martin Dorsman said, “ECSA is pleased that our application was successful and that the importance of developing a forward-looking skills strategy for our sector has been recognised. We are most grateful for the trust that has been placed in us and our social partners and other consortium members to bring it to fruition.”
