Extraordinary achievements in maritime safety were honoured at the annual Safety at Sea Awards on 10 September in London. The IHS Markit event – held as part of London International Shipping Week 2019 – saw maritime companies, charities and individuals recognised for achievements in training, product design, seamanship and bravery.

Shell Shipping & Maritime was among the big winners on the night, taking home two of the top awards in the Maritime Employer of the Year and Best Safety Service of the Year categories respectively, while George Quick (Vice President, International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots) took home the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The event, which was established more than a decade ago, recognises and celebrates the considerable efforts made to raise safety standards in the shipping industry, both at sea and onshore. The United States Coast Guard’s AMVER Awards were again held as part of the ceremony, honouring 54 companies managing a total of 393 vessels.

The annual Safety at Sea / Amver Award for Seamanship was shared by three companies – Danaos Shipping Co (managers of Express Berlin), G2 Ocean (managers of Star Gran), and Pacific Basin Shipping Hong Kong (managers of Indigo Lake) – for the role that their vessels and crews paid in assisting a lone sailor, as he experienced a series of mishaps on a journey from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to Los Angeles in the USA.

Heike Deggim, director of the Maritime Safety Division at the IM, gave the opening remarks at the event, which was held at the Marriott hotel in Grosvenor square. Other notable guests included Bernadette Kelly, permanent secretary for the UK Department of Transport and Guy Platten, secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping, who was also a judge.
