A COVID-19 emergency fund of GBP2 million (USD2.5 million) is available for merchant seafarers, fishers, and their families that have been financially impacted by the pandemic.

The fund from charity Seafarers UK will be distributed throughout 2020 and 2021, with 75% of the budget allocated to the international merchant seafaring community, and 25% allocated to UK coastal fishing fleets.

The COVID-19 emergency fund is in addition to Seafarers UK existing annual budget of GBP2 million  (USD2.5 million) for grants currently being offered to charities and other organisations providing support services to merchant seafarers, fishers, and their families.

Peter Wilkinson, chairman of Seafarers UK, said the extra fund will “help seafarers and fishers recover from the widespread impact on their wellbeing and livelihoods as a result of the coronavirus”.
