The Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) plans to support UK cadets who are unable to complete the training required to obtain their Certificate of Competency (CoC) within the allotted Support for Marine Training (SMarT) funding period, due to disruptions caused by COVID-19.

The additional funding is designed to assist cadets to remain sponsored if they are unable to acquire their first CoC within the allotted 150-week period. Eligible cadets, that are still going through the system, may be entitled to additional funding for the next three years, stated a Maritime Information Note published by the MCA.

The initial funding extension is planned for a period of three months, with the potential to be extended for another three months. To claim this funding each training provider must provide a breakdown of how it will be allocated to ensure it will benefit the cadet’s development needs and meets state aid reporting requirements.
