A very large crude carrier (VLCC) owned and operated by COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation has collided with a feeder container vessel in the Singapore Strait.

The VLCC, 2004-built 297,376-dwt Xin Jin Yang, was transporting crude oil from Al Basrah Oil Terminal in Iraq to China.

The feeder ship, Danum 160, a 908 TEU unit owned and operated by Shin Yang Shipping of Malaysia, was moving from Port Klang to Kuching.

The collision occurred around 2100 h local time on 22 January 2020, east of Karimun Besar.

While Danum 160 escaped unscathed and continued its voyage to Kuching, Xin Jin Yang was anchored for inspections as a precaution.

The Straits of Singapore and Malacca are the busiest shipping routes in the world, with more than 80,000 ships crossing the waters every year.
